How the game went
In the 200th year of the University of South Carolina, the Gamecocks entered 7-3 after being ranked in the Top 25 every week. They jumped out to a 20-9 lead behind a strong running game and held on.
The win secured a second straight Outback Bowl bid, and South Carolina reached eight wins in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1987-88. It beat Ohio State in the Outback Bowl to finish 9-3.
Because of the September 11 attacks, this was not Clemson’s regular-season finale. Its postponed game against Duke was played December 1, and Clemson later won the Humanitarian Bowl over Louisiana Tech.
