How the game went

A year after the brawl, the teams met at midfield before kickoff to shake hands.

The win left Clemson quarterback Charlie Whitehurst unbeaten against South Carolina in four years, the only quarterback on either side to go 4-0 in the rivalry. It was Steve Spurrier’s first season at South Carolina.

Clemson went on to win the Champs Sports Bowl. South Carolina lost the Independence Bowl.
